Jacky’s new album makes money

With sales for Jacky Cheung’s new album <> reaching 200,000 copies in Asia alone, a celebration gathering was held yesterday. At the gathering, Jacky also debuted his new MV for the song <>, which he invested HKD$500,000 of his own money to make. The MV was directed by Xia Yong Kang and features mainland China model Du Juan.

Given the extremely high production costs of Jacky’s new album and the disadvantage of not having TVB as a promotional stage, the fact that the album is able to avoid loss and actually make money is amazing. To this, Jacky commented: “I still hope that the royalties issue will be resolved soon so that the MV for <> can air on TVB.”

Jacky expressed that initially, the production costs for the <> MV was estimated at HKD$200,000 to HKD$300,000, however after filming was completed, the costs ended up being way higher. Now he understands the difficulty record companies go through when it comes to making MVs; he says: “Xia Yong Kang is a million dollar director now, so I am very grateful that he and Du Juan were willing to help out and do the MV free of charge.”

Jacky Cheung concert tour embroiled in fraud case

BEIJING: The management company that represents Canto-pop superstar Jacky Cheung, Fun Entertainment Ltd, has been accused of defrauding 16 Chinese concert promoters of more than 17 million yuan (S$3.4 million) in down payments to co-organise the Heavenly King's latest concert tour in China, said Chinese media.

The concert promoters alleged that they were approached by a woman named Shen Shi Yi, who claimed she was the owner of the Beijing branch of Fun Entertainment.

Shen convinced them that she had the authority to bring onboard concert promoters to co-organise Cheung's upcoming concert tour and collected down payments from them.

The money was then funnelled into her personal account.

In fact, Shen's company was not related to the Hong Kong-based Fun Entertainment (whose Chinese name is Tian Xing Yu Le) and she had no power to engage Chinese concert promoters for Cheung's concert.

Fun Entertainment said in a statement that it "had not authorised any individual or organisation to collect down payments for Jackie Cheung's upcoming concert tour".

The concert promoters involved were up in arms over the statement and felt that Fun Entertainment had a duty to find a solution to their problem.

"We are very angry. We obviously paid them the money and now they claim we have not," said one concert promoter.

Others called on Shen, who had since quit her position, to come forward and take responsibility.

Cheung's manager and head of Fun Entertainment, Florence Chan, responding to mounting criticism from the Chinese concert promoters involved, said that her company has sent specialists to China to investigate the matter.

She has also pledged to refund all the money these concert promoters have paid once the investigations have discovered the truth of the matter, in order to avoid any misunderstandings with them.

However, Chan, speaking to Chinese media, insisted that her firm had nothing to do with Shen's unauthorised collection of down payments.

"Shen Shi Yi acted alone. The companies Beijing Tian Xing [the alleged Beijing branch of Fun Entertainment Ltd] and Hong Kong Tian Xing [Fun Entertainment] were registered separately and completely unrelated. It is untrue that the former is a branch of the latter," said Chan, adding that the incident will not affect Cheung's concert tour.

Cheung, 48, who is currently in Hong Kong, said he is aware of the matter and will be holding a press conference along with Chan and her husband, to clear the air on the matter some time in the near future.

Jacky Cheung happy to share marriage tips with Andy Lau

After the marriages of his fellow Heavenly Kings got exposed by the media, Jacky Cheung sincerely congratulated Andy Lau and Leon Lai on their martial union and hastened Andy to have children soon. Jacky expressed that he does not have any secret tips on having children but was more than willing to share his experiences with Andy if the latter talked to him about it.

Jacky laughed and commented that he was often teased for his looks back then and did not feel any pressure when he announced his marriage. "Back then, my only concern was whether I could afford to bring up my children. I felt that you need to have the ability to care before you can have children."

The 48-year-old father of two shared, "I would like to congratulate Andy and Leon. Actually I am of the same age as Andy and it would be strange if he didn't get married. In 1996, Jacky registered his marriage to May Lo in London and is a happy father to a pair of daughters. You will become more open-minded and not think with a one-tracked mind."

With 20 years in the entertainment circuit, the singer has learnt and grown a lot as compared to when he first debuted. "I have gone through happy and unhappy experiences. However because I was doing things I loved doing, I do not have any regrets." At that note, the singer sighed as he talked about the various worries he had, "When you don't have children, you have problems about not having children. When you have children, you start to have problems about your children. A marriage will also have its own problems. Life is in fact filled with many problems."

He poignantly ended off with a thoughtful comment as he shared, "What I have learnt from life is that it is most important for you to be happy with the people around you."
