Scientists kill cancer cells with "trojan horse"

Australian scientists have made a break through for the treatment of cancer using a "trogan horse" method. Below is the article from Reuters, 29 June 2009.

SYDNEY - Australian scientists have developed a "trojan horse" therapy to combat cancer, using a bacterially-derived nano cell to penetrate and disarm the cancer cell before a second nano cell kills it with chemotherapy drugs.

The "trojan horse" therapy has the potential to directly target cancer cells with chemotherapy, rather than the current treatment that sees chemotherapy drugs injected into a cancer patient and attacking both cancer and healthy cells.

Sydney scientists Dr Jennifer MacDiarmid and Dr Himanshu Brahmbhatt, who formed EnGenelC Pty Ltd in 2001, said they had achieved 100 percent survival in mice with human cancer cells by using the "trojan horse" therapy in the past two years.

The scientists plan to start human clinical trials in the coming months. Human trials of the cell delivery system will start next week at the Peter MacCullum Cancer Center at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and The Austin at the University of Melbourne.

The therapy, published in the latest Nature Biotechnology journal, sees mini-cells called EDVs (EnGenelC Delivery Vehicle) attach and enter the cancer cell.
The first wave of mini-cells release ribonucleic acid molecules, called siRNA, which switch off the production of proteins that make the cancer cell resistant to chemotherapy.

A second wave of EDV cells is then accepted by the cancer cell and releases chemotherapy drugs, killing the cancer cell.

"The beauty is that our EDVs operate like 'Trojan Horses' They arrive at the gates of the affected cells and are always allowed in," said MacDiarmid.

"We are playing the rogue cells at their own game. They switch-on the gene to produce the protein to resist drugs, and we are switching-off the gene which, in turn, enables the drugs to enter."

RNA interference, or RNAi, is designed to silence genes responsible for producing disease-causing proteins and is one of the hottest areas of biotechnology research. RNA was the basis of the 2006 Nobel Prize in medicine.

Dozens of biotechnology companies are looking for ways to manipulate RNA to block genes that produce disease-causing proteins involved in cancer, blindness or AIDS.

Brahmbhatt said that after treatment with conventional drug therapy, a large number of cancer cells die but a small percentage of the cells can produce proteins that make cancer cells resistant to chemotherapeutic drugs.

"Consequently, follow-up drug treatments can fail. The tumors thus become untreatable and continue to flourish, ultimately killing the patient," said Brahmbhatt.

"We want to be part of moving toward a time when cancers can be managed as a chronic disease rather than being regarded as a death sentence," he said.

The Nature report said the mini-cells were "well tolerated with no adverse side effects or deaths in any of the actively treated animals, despite repeated dosing."

"Significantly, our methodology does not damage the normal cells and is applicable to a wide spectrum of solid cancer types," said MacDiarmid.

"The hope is that the benign nature of this EDV technology should enable cancer sufferers to get on with their lives and operate normally using out-patient therapy."

'The Partner' Actor Lee Plays Flirty Lawyer

Heartthrob actor Lee Dong-wuk has made a comeback in a new drama series as a playful and snobbish lawyer. In his last drama, "Sweet Life," his melancholy character had melted the hearts of women viewers.

In an interview during the premiere presentation of the new KBS2 Wednesday-Thursday series "The Partner", Lee--the lead actor--said, "We are filming intensely. I will do my absolute best."

The character he plays is the flirtatious and cynical lawyer Lee Tae-jo. Lee jokingly said, “Being flirtatious is the complete opposite of my real self so portraying that aspect is painful."

He was also upbeat about his less serious and heavy role in the new drama. Lee said, "My Girl" was super popular and "Sweet Life" was more of a quality character series. "The Partner" is somewhere between the two. It doesn't center on one big story but has a central plot and sub episodes. It can't be boring."

Director Hwang Eui-kyung praised Lee for beautifully acting out his character, a person of both logic and passion whose heart is "like a desert that cannot be filled by whatever means." Playing opposite actress Kim Hyeon-joo, Lee is expected to show a comical, arrogant and flirty side of his TV persona. "The Partner" first aired on June 24 on KBS2.

Megan Fox Has An Angelina Crush.. who doesn't?

Star of "Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen"
super sexy Megan Fox

Transformers hottie, Megan Fox, recently appeared on Letterman where she spilled the beans about her crush on superstar, Angelina Jolie.

While discussing her love life, the 23-year-old beauty said, “I don’t think I’m capable of being a good wife to someone right now.”

Foxy went on to say, “Every time a relationship ends, I say, ‘If I could just be Angelina’s girlfriend, I would be so happy!’ “

They look so much alike. If Angie and Megan ever hooked up it would probably be like twins getting it on. Then again, I suspect that Angie prefers a classier kind of girl.

Kpop: Girls’ Generation Poised to Break Own Record with 2nd Mini-album

This is a 9 members Kpop group - Girls' Generation. What is the point of having 9 people in a group. It's not like they all have different voices that make a difference in their songs. They all sound the same to me, so why 9, isn't it a bit of a crowd??

Anyway KBS reports ....

The nine-member girl-band Girls' Generation soared to stardom early this year with its song “Gee.” In an interview that was held June 22, the Girls’ Generation members spoke about how their popularity has changed their lives. All nine of them have been invited to appear on popular variety shows that further boosted their popularity. But there was a downside as well: fatigue from tight schedules.

Hyo-yeon says she was surprised to learn that even elderly people recognized her on the street. Parodies of “Gee” were shown on innumerable shows while magazines introduced Girls’ Generation’s fashion and makeup styles.

Youn-a says she saw several photos of Girls’ Generation in a single magazine and that her photo was published in the “Horoscope Stars of the Year” section.

In the military, there is even a joke that soldiers who join the army with several autographs of Girls’ Generation members are guaranteed good treatment for two years. The band members say their stylists receive one day off whenever they get their autographs and that they gave their autographs innumerable times to soldiers. They added jokingly that singer Kang Ta, who is currently serving in the military, was happy to get their autograph and is now treated with “all due respect” in the military.

Rain settles US lawsuit

South Korean pop singer and actor Rain (real name is Jung Ji-hoon) has settled a lawsuit over his cancelled concert in Honollulu in 2007. Back in March of this year, Rain was ordered by Hawaii court to pay up $8 million to Click Entertainment, the US based company that promoted Rain's concert. The settlement amount was not disclosed however many reports have suggested that the settlement amount would be less than the original $8 million that Rain was required to pay.

Rain’s Hawaii concert, supposed to be the first stop on his U.S. tour, was originally scheduled for June 15, 2007 at Aloha Stadium and tickets were sold for a maximum of $300. But the concert was cancelled a few days before the scheduled date.

Click Entertainment said the cancellation cost it more than 1.5 million dollars and its business reputation was damaged.

Rain argued that the concert stage was not properly set up for him. He also said he was unable to use his name in the United States because of a copyright dispute from a US Beatles tribute band also called Rain.

Kristen Stewart has a new look.... and it's not nice!

What the ....?

Kristen Stewart's new hair cut look awful! Who ever it was that cut that hair for her should be shot. It doesn't suit her and she looks mean.

This is not the look of Bella that our the handsome Edward falls in love with. In fact, i think if Edward see Bella with that hair cut, he might decide to drink her blood and change her into a vampire. She already looks like one, so he might as well grant her that wish.

What do you think of her hair cut?

Ada Choi has been nominated for the Best Female Award for her role as Jessica at this year's Shanghai Television Festival Magnolia Award. She played a smart, manipulative, "selfish and scheming" person who would not stop at anything to get to her goal..... to be rich and powerful.

Ada said that this role has been her best performance to date and that she has fallen in love with her character.

If you've seen the drama then you would probably agree that this is one of Ada's best performance to date. I have always been a fan of Ada and think that she's one of the best actresses at TVB if not the best.

Jessica's character changes from a sweet girl however consumed by greed and fame to become a manipulative and scheming person. She's considered murdering her sister to achive her goal.

"AFTER signing PR guru Max Markson as her new agent, “Chk-Chk Boom Girl” Clare Werbeloff is headed into the recording studio to make an album.

When a news crew asked for witnesses to the shooting , Werbeloff, who longs to be famous, stepped forward on the spur of the moment - and straight into instant celebrity.

“There were these two wogs fighting,” Ms Werbeloff said to the camera.

“The fatter wog said to the skinnier wog: ‘Oi bro, you slept with my cousin.’ And the other one said: ‘Nah man, I didn’t for shit, eh’ and the other one goes: ‘I will call on my fully sick boys, eh.’ And then pulled out a gun and went ‘chk-chk boom’.”
