Tony Leung 'hands' it to Carina Lau

International award-winning actor Tony Leung has an inclination for self-mutilation, and once hurt himself when his then-girlfriend and current wife Carina Lau could not be contacted by phone.

This was revealed by veteran TV personality May Fung on the last episode of TVB's Be My Guest, the talkshow hosted by the station's former general manager Stephen Chan, who has since been arrested on corruption charges.

May's words cannot be taken lightly. She has been in the business for more than 30 years and is considered the pioneer generation of artiste managers. During her tenure, she has groomed some of today's megastars like Andy Lau, Aaron Kwok, Tony Leung and Stephen Chow.

She said that Tony and Carina were least attracted to each other.

"Before he was with Carina, he had countless relationships. They might have known each other for 5,000 years but there was no spark. But after working together in 1989 they became passionately in love.

"We had sent Tony to Taiwan to film a (acclaimed filmmaker) Hou Hsiao-Hsien movie. One evening, when Carina was at a [Hong Kong] Jockey Club event, where mobile phones must be switched off, Tony went crazy as he couldn't find her. He started hitting his hands on the wall to the extent he had to be sent back to Hong Kong to treat his injuries."

But Tony is a very smart man who is mature beyond his years, May said.

At the height of TVB's dispute with its famed 'Five Tiger Generals' of Tony, Andy, Michael Miu, Felix Wong and Kent Tong, the star of In the Mood for Love and Infernal Affairs was the first to extend his contract with the TV station, guaranteeing him the best shot at fame.

She added that although he has never been very fond of talking, he was the most approachable of the five, and understood fully the opportunities available to him.

During the interview, the former TVB executive discussed at length many famous personalities, including the revelation that late actress Barbara Yung had tried killing herself once, before finally succeeding in 1985.

She also talked about talent-spotting Aaron, Simon Yam and Ekin Cheng, whom she called "really quiet", and how intelligent retired actress Cherie Chung is, contrary to popular belief.
